by Joshua Renfroe & Curtis Taylor, Jr.
It was a late summer afternoon in August when Josh and I first connected over FaceTime. He was pacing, animated, talking through ideas to mark the one-year anniversary of Black Boy Fly, his debut photography book. But this time, he wasn’t thinking about another book—he wanted a film.
The vision came through instantly. Our conversation sparked with phrases like glitter on basketball courts and using tech to amplify visuals on Black bodies. It sounded like pure magic. From there, I shifted into producer mode—mapping timelines, scouting locations, sourcing the right tech, and helping Josh and his team understand what was possible.
What followed was one of the smoothest collaborations I’ve ever been part of. We wrapped production on time, captured everything we envisioned, and brought a bold, cinematic concept to life. Special thanks to Curtis, who directed the shoot remotely from Los Angeles with total ease and clarity. When timing aligns, magic happens—and that Sunday afternoon, it did.
I'm so grateful to the crew who showed up with care and intention. Projects like this are a reminder that creativity isn’t just resilient—it’s necessary. I hope this piece inspires others to lead with vision, collaborate with joy, and make something that flies.
